Installing WordPress MU on a CPanel/WHM Server

I was encountering some difficulties installing WordPress MU 1.0 using different subdomains, and I finally figured it out after some time, so I thought I’d do a walkthough to help fellow MU-wannabes.
I think its important, first to understand that different web hosts use different admin control panel systems, and mine is using CPanel/WHM. I have a reseller account, so I have access to the WHM console.
To triple confirm, your webhost admin should look something similiar to this:
and your WHM, if you are a reseller, should look like this:
Actually, on a second thought - it may not, because this is one of the skins… but just make sure you are using CPanel/WHM if you want to follow through with this walkthrough.
What are we going to achieve here?
At the end of the whole thing, you will install WordPress MU 1.0 on your server, using a different subdomain for each blog. So for example, if your domain is bloggingiscool.com, then you will be able to quickly create blogs like http://firstblog.bloggingiscool.com, http://secondblog.bloggingiscool.com… and so on.
In this installation, you will also be installing it in the root directory of your server (i.e. public_html), so http://bloggingiscool.com will be your main MU blog. You can choose to install it in a subdirectory, such that http://bloggingiscool.com/blogs as your main MU blog, but again I will cover only the first one. Go figure (duh, just dump the code one level deeper!), if you want to install it in a subdirectory.
Note that WordPress MU also offers another alternative, that is to install each blog in a different subdirectory. I will not be covering that here.

Configure your wildcard DNS and sub domains (sounds geeky)
If you read the readme, it recommends you to Matt’s blog where he explains how to do so. But to me, it didn’t really help, because he was giving me a bunch of code - I had a graphical web interface for my reseller admin console.
Anyway, here’s what you need to do.
Log in to your WHM account. On the left, find and click “Edit DNS Zone”.
Your accounts appear on the right. Select the domain you use for your WPMU installation, and click “Edit”
You will see a bunch of text boxes and a bunch of numbers!
Whoa! What is this? To be frank, I don’t know much either, but what I know is that messing with these number is no fun (because I’ve messed up with them before, and caused some trouble for the server admin :mrgreen:)… but I know what to do now.
You will see something like this. (erm.. minus the red arrows. Those are my drawings. Nice? :))
Create a new entry after “Add New Entries Below this Line”.
You should specify * for domain, 14400 for TTL (default value), A for record type, and your server IP address. To find out what IP you should type, refer to the record with your domain above.
Click save.
Go ahead and retrieve the same page again (i.e. Edit DNS Zone -> Select Your Account). You should see the new entry there.
If that is the case, you are done with WHM. *phew*
BUT you are not totally done yet!
Step 7: Erm… part 2 of step 6? I promise this is the last part!
You need to add something to your httpd.conf file.
I personally do not have the opportunity to do so, so I had to mail my friendly server admin to do it.
Here is what you need to add:

Where:
{SERVER_IP_ADDRESS} is your server IP address
{CPANEL_USERNAME} is your CPanel username. Normally this should be eight characters or less. This is the username you use to log into your CPanel console for your account
{YOUR_DOMAIN} refers to your domain, e.g. bloggingiscool.com
So, giving an example, where my IP is 123.456.789.123, CPanel username is blogcool and domain is bloggingiscool.com, the code is like this:
DocumentRoot /home/blogcool/public_htmlBytesLog domlogs/bloggingiscool.com-bytes_logUser blogcoolGroup blogcoolServerAlias bloggingiscool.com *.bloggingiscool.comServerName www.bloggingiscool.comCustomLog domlogs/bloggingiscool.com combined
Again, you (or your server admin) need to add this to your httpd.conf file, and according to Matt, this entry must come after any valid subdomain VirtualHost entries you may have. So if you already have another subdomain on that same account, then make sure this entry come after the subdomain’s entry.
Then you are really finally done!
You can login now and start whipping out blogs. Remember your password is sent to the email address you specified.
So.. installing WordPress MU is not as easy as the walk in the park right? At least not for me! But just imagine what you could do when you know you can create blogs on the fly, on your own domain!
Give me more time to fiddle with WPMU, and I’ll tell you more.
Oh… If anyone with access to a httpd.conf could provide details on the part to add the VirtualHost record, then it’ll be wonderful!

I just added all the WPMU sites that are new since I last updated the list in the sidebar of this blog. How do I set an A record?

You can create A records from the Advanced DNS Settings area of the Domain Control Panel.

Please note: Any changes that you make to your advanced DNS settings can interrupt your service. If you are not an advanced user, we strongly recommend that you not change these settings.

To access the Domain Control Panel:

Sign in to your Business Control Panel. (If you have not yet signed in with your Yahoo! ID and password, you'll be prompted to do so here.)
Once signed in, you will see modules for each of your domain names on the "Manage My Services" page. Select the "Domain Control Panel" link that corresponds to the domain whose record you wish to edit.

To create an A record:

Click the "Manage Advanced DNS Settings" link.
Click the "Add Record" button.
In the "Source" field, enter a prefix to define the host name (the prefix for host.yourdomainname.com, for example, is host).
Enter a destination IP address in the "Destination" field.
Click the "Submit" button.
Confirm your choice by clicking "Submit" again.

You'll return to the "Advanced DNS Settings" page, and your new A record will appear in the A and CNAME records list. While your changes will appear in the name servers within minutes, please be aware that it can take up to 72 hours for new records to propagate to all name servers on the Internet.

Note: Yahoo! allows you to create multiple A records for the same host name. You might create multiple records for a strategy commonly referred to as "round robin." If you don't wish to create round robin A records, delete the extra records.

Simple:Press Forums is the brain child of Andy Stains and is hosted at YellowSwordfish. Visit that site for full download and support.

Simple:Press Forums (SPF) has been developed as a very easy to install, full featured, forums and comunity plugin. SPF includes private messaging, threaded Topics, cross posting of topics from Forum to Blog (and blog to forum), Customizable profiles with avatars (gravatars or uploads), file uploading in posts and much much more.

SPF effectivly replaces several forum plugins including Automatic's own bbPress.

Integration into the blog environment is simple and complete, even allowing WPMU admins to allow sub-blog owners to integrate forums into their sites and themes easily.

Users can enjoy private messaging, forum management allows for usergroup based forums and classing of users (different users, different group abilities, non-admin user moderators, etc)

Andy has been very good in supporting both Wordpress and WPMU as best as he can.

In it's current incarnation, testing is being conducted that shows, SPF is 99.99% compatable with WPMU 1.3.3 and 1.5.1 (1.3.3 recomended)

WPMU for Dummies: Part Deux

is a mu-plugin to enhance the SiteAdmin-->Admin(wpmu-admin.php) page only.

This version will only work with WPMU2.6.x

WPMU Dashboard: adds a widgetized sidebar for SiteAdmins only to the SiteAdminâ€“>Admin page(I use it for RSS feeds, sitewide widgets)

Optional: Go forth and add `if(is_site_admin())` to any widget_init function and it'll only be available to SiteAdmin, otherwise widgets are shared with remaining sidebars in the SiteAdmin primary blog.
All WPMU dashboard widget options are stored/called from the SiteAdmin primary blog. If you have multiple SiteAdmins, the WPMU Dashboard will be unique to each of them. Widgets are added to the WPMU Dashboard in the usual way(Design-->Widgets) but only from the SiteAdmin's primary blog.
Bookmarks to my favorite "WP and WPMU Help" sites (overwritten by widgets when active)

Search buttons to several WP/WPMU sites: Forums, plugins, themes, Trac, Codex PHP, etc.
Error Log Editor: searches ABSPATH for error_logs and if found displays them each in their own editable textarea(large error_log files will stall the page, however). Saving an empty error_log will delete it. For fun, there is a corny SiteAdmin WPMU2.6 "Esteem Check"(WP easter-egg) built in if no error_logs are found.

The SiteAdmin page is basically a blank canvas, now it's a bit busier and, as SiteAdmin, my most frequently visited page.

Usage Note: If you let your error_logs swell to the crack of doom, the plugin will stall the loading of the wpmu-admin.php page. Disable the plugin, delete error_logs via ftp(or however you do it). Non-wordpress error_logs may be listed if the directory if within ABSPATH, ie bbress.

This is a "works for me" mu-plugin, like it, fix it, enhance it, share it, . . . or lump it.

When setting up my Wordpress MU site (http://missionsplace.com) I couldn't find any simple way to make certain plugins in the wp-content/plugins folder accessible only to the site admin (me). This is a simple plugin I made that you can drop into the wp-plugins folder to install.Instructions: Filters out specific plugins so only the Wordpress MU Site Admin can see/activate them on the plugins admin page. Drop into the wp-content/mu-plugins directory to install. To mark a plugin for filtering, add the text 'SiteAdminOnly' in the "Plugin Name:" section of the corresponding plugin file. For example, I would change the first line for this plugin file from: Plugin Name: Wordpress MU Plugin Filter to: Plugin Name: Wordpress MU Plugin Filter: SiteAdminOnly Do this for all plugins you want to hide from WPMU users. My name is Andrea, and you may have seen me around the forums. I’ve been involved with MU since February, 2006 and with WordPress for at least a year before that. I’ve been blogging since 1999. My first MU setup (and baby) is Homeschooljournal.net, a free blogging site and community for homeschoolers। I learned a lot from that, and yes, from a lot of mistakes as well.

Although I may look like a mild-mannered housewife and mom of 4, I come from a computing background, starting with that Vic-20 my grandpa bought me. I like to tell people I have half a degree in programming, because I quit partway through and got my Mrs. degree instead. The truth is I am better at theory and documentation. I am also queen of cut and paste, and I like to try things just to see what happens. (At least I know my limits. ;))

Over the years, I helped my husband Ron with his computer consulting business. He’s a programmer by trade. At least right now - he’s also been a network specialist, webmaster, database analyst and sysadmin. I learned through osmosis. I’ve also taught myself HTML, CSS, and now some SQL and PHP.

Our dinner conversation are so interesting, our oldest is now getting his degree in programming and our youngest counts in binary.

Upgrade to WPMU 2.6.1

Unlike the upgrade between regular Wordpress from 2.6 to 2.6.1 being non-urgent, this upgrade for WPMU *is* required if you’re on 2.6. One reason is it fixes a really nasty bug with deleting blogs.
